Jeju Air 2216 Crash

On December 30th, 2024, at Muan airport(RKJB), Jeju Air 2216 crashed and killed 179 people.

Jeju Air was flying back to South Korea after Bangkok and the flight time was 4:30 hours.

It seems there was a bird strike while approaching runway 01, and there was a fire on the right engine.

After approach runway 01, for some reason pilot had to do a 360-degree turn and land on runway 19 with a tailwind.

On the second attempt at runway 19, it seems there was also a landing gear malfunction.

B737-800 is designed to deploy landing gear manually with hydraulic failure, but we don't know what exactly happened yet.

The pilot did a belly landing, and it went well before hitting the ILS wall at the end of runway 19.

According to ICAO regulations, any equipment or installation required for air navigation purposes located on a runway strip, runway end safety area, or taxiway strip should be frangible and mounted as low as possible.

But in case of ILS, due to its heavy mass, it cannot be made frangible. It's regulated by its distance from the end of the runway instead.

The distance from the ILS to end of the runway should be carefully investigated if the construction followed the ICAO rule.

Finally, I give my condolences to those souls on board.

South Korea would have 7 days of national mourning period for this accident.
